The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) Bill F. Cable (ASN: 0-5322054), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Cable distinguished himself by valorous actions on 21 July 1967, while serving as Aviation Section Commander with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. During Operation EMPORIA, along National Highway 20, friendly ground elements were engaged by a reinforced battalion of Viet Cong employing rockets, recoilless rifles, automatic weapons and small arms. At the time of the engagement, Captain Cable was flying an OH-23G light observation helicopter in an aerial reconnaissance mission in conjunction with the ground forces. Reacting instantly, Captain Cable maneuvered his unarmed helicopter at treetop level to enable the S-3 Officer, who was accompanying him, to direct operations. For the next ten hours, Captain Cable landed only long enough to refuel, preferring to stay in the air until the battle subsided. In addition to displaying great personal bravery and intrepid airmanship, Captain Cable professionally directed armed helicopters, tactical air strikes and supporting artillery. He later led medical evacuation helicopters to safe landing zones so that casualties could be quickly treated. Captain Cable’s superior airmanship, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
