The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Floyd J. Brooks, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual combat with an armed enemy on 24 July 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a tank fell off a steep embankment, turning over completely and pinning one of the crew members under it . Sergeant Brooks immediately volunteered to join a rescue team to free the injured man. Ignoring the possibility that the vehicle could fall further, Sergeant Brooke crawled under the tank and began to dig the soldier out. With great deliberation he was able to free the injured man and slowly remove him from his precarious position. Staff Sergeant Brooks’ actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
