The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Floyd J. Brooks, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Brooks distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 January 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, his unit suddenly came under intense enemy fire, disabling one of the lead vehicles and seriously wounding one of the crew members. Immediately and with complete disregard for the enemy fire directed at him, Sergeant Brooks went to the aid of the casualty and moved him to a relatively safe area. As he was assisting additional casualties, Sergeant Brooks observed several enemy soldiers advancing on his position. After engaging the enemy element and forcing it to withdraw, he then returned to assist in evacuating the other wounded. Throughout this time he was constantly exposed to enemy fire, yet his bravery and concern for his fellow soldiers never faltered. Staff Sergeant Brooks’ gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
