The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant William T. Brock (ASN: RA-14678212), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 14 March 1969 while serving with Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while conducting a reconnaissance-in-force operation, the company came under fire from a well entrenched, well-concealed enemy force, and the lead vehicle received a direct hit, killing one crew member, wounding two others and disabling the vehicle. Reacting instantly, Sergeant Brock directed his vehicle in front of the heavily damaged tank to protect the wounded from the enemy fire. Despite automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire coming from the nearest enemy bunker, he assaulted it and destroyed it with his tank. When darkness began to fall and the company found it necessary to set up a night defensive position, the friendly troops began clearing the bunkers in the area they chose to defend. Suddenly two enemy soldiers charged out of a well-concealed fortification, and began firing at the approaching friendly troops. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Brock, armed only with a pistol, assaulted the hostile soldiers and killed one and forced two others into the range of demolition charges. Platoon Sergeant Brock’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
