The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) William A. Bristol, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Bristol distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 12 August 1969 while serving as Commanding Officer, Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while conducting a reconnaissance mission Troop E suddenly began receiving small arms fire from an unknown-sized enemy force. As the friendly force formed on-line and began advancing, they came under an intense barrage of rocket-propelled grenade and automatic weapons fire from a battalion-sized enemy unit in well-concealed and heavily-fortified bunker positions. The initial volleys of fire destroyed the element’s radio communication. Realizing the necessity for communication and immediate reaction, Captain Bristol dismounted the command vehicle and ran to each of the vehicles, giving instructions to his men and reforming the assault formation. He then remounted his vehicle and by standing in an exposed position he commanded his men by the use of hand and arm signals. In spite of the wounds he sustained during this action, Captain Bristol continued to direct his men in an attack upon the entrenched enemy. Captain Bristol’s leadership enabled the friendly element to defeat the enemy force with a minimum amount of friendly casualties. Captain Bristol’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
