The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Donald F. Borden, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Borden distinguished himself while serving as Squadron Operations Officer, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a reconnaissance in force mission in the vicinity of Boi Loi Woods, Tay Ninh Province. Upon arrival at the battle scene, Major Borden quickly organized evacuation of the casualties and led a mounted assault against the enemy forces in an effort to rescue a trapped soldier. Suddenly, his vehicle was hit by an enemy rocket. Dismounting his crippled track, he dashed to another vehicle amid intense enemy fire. Then, he directed his elements to a hedge row and called for artillery support. Following the artillery fire, he again led his force in an assault upon the belligerent positions. During the assault, he engaged three enemy soldiers with M-16 rifle fire and eliminated them. By his actions, the hostile force was defeated. Major Borden’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
