The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Ronald G. Berry, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 28 April 1970 while serving as a pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a helicopter was downed by enemy small arms fire. The Aero Rifle Platoon that was operating in the area attempted to rescue the crew and recover the craft, but was repelled by heavy automatic weapons fire. The platoon was in desperate need of water, smoke grenades and a stretcher for the wounded pilots. Captain Berry volunteered to enter the contact area and attempt to extract the pilots. Unable to locate a suitable landing zone Captain Berry hovered over the area while his observer dropped all of his smoke grenades to the platoon. Captain Berry obtained more smoke grenades and water and returned to re-supply the unit. He returned to a fire support base to obtain a stretcher and again returned and allowed his observer to lower the stretcher to the Aero Rifle Platoon. A medical evacuation ship soon entered the scene and hoisted the injured men aboard. Captain Berry’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
