The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW-2) Herbert A. Berry, Jr., United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer Berry distinguished himself while piloting a helicopter gunship in support of South Vietnamese forces east of Suong, Cambodia. The allied advance was halted due to heavy enemy fire. Amid intense enemy flak, Chief Warrant Officer Berry engaged the enemy targets, silencing several enemy anti-aircraft positions. When his co-pilot was seriously wounded, Mister Berry maintained control of his crippled airship and flew him safety to nearby medical facilities. Chief Warrant Officer Berry’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
