The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Michael D. Bates (ASN: W-3159579), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 17 April 1969, while serving as a helicopter commander with the Air Section of the 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while Lieutenant Bates was flying as an escort for a convoy, the ground elements were suddenly engaged by a North Vietnamese Army force. Ignoring the intense fire directed at his aircraft, he quickly began marking the enemy positions with smoke grenades and providing suppressive fire with his machine guns. Continuing to brave the enemy ground fire, Lieutenant Bates coordinated artillery strikes and gunship assaults upon the hostile entrenchments. At one point during the fierce engagement when he learned that an evacuation helicopter was needed immediately, he unhesitatingly landed in the middle of the contact area. Upon spotting an enemy position which was placing intense fire on his helicopter, he assaulted the bunker and killed its occupants with his rifle. Continuing to ignore the hostile fire, he returned to his aircraft and helped load the wounded on board. He then flew them to a nearby medical facility for prompt treatment. Second Lieutenant Bates’ outstanding courage, devotion to duty and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
