Headquarters, United States Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 2373 (July 29, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Blaine Stephen Ball, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Ball distinguished himself while serving as Platoon Leader, Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a reconnaissance mission north of Cu Chi. Once his platoon initiated contact with a hostile force, Lieutenant Ball positioned his track in a location so that suppressive fire could be placed upon the belligerent force, enabling the save evacuation of wounded personnel. Afterwards, he summoned air ambulances and secured a landing zone for their arrival. First Lieutenant Ball’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
