The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Donald E. Anderson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 13 April 1969, while serving as an assault vehicle commander with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date the troop received a call to reinforce an infantry unit engaged with a heavily-fortified enemy force. As the armored vehicles assaulted the hostile positions, Sergeant Anderson was wounded when a rocket-propelled grenade impacted nearby. Nevertheless, he refused to be evacuated and remained with his vehicle. Upon learning that another vehicle had received a direct rocket-propelled grenade hit, wounding all but one of the crew members, Sergeant Anderson ran through the enemy fusillade to aid the casualties and secure the vehicle. After driving the vehicle to a safe location, he began unloading ammunition which had pinned one of the wounded men inside the vehicle. Sergeant Anderson then helped move the casualty to a landing zone to be evacuated. After insuring that the other wounded crew members had received proper care, he began moving among the infantry and armor elements to supervise the evacuation of other wounded personnel. He continued to expose himself to the hostile fire until the enemy force had been defeated. Sergeant Anderson’s courage, devotion to duty and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
