The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Clinton C. Adkins (ASN: RA-52423377), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 9 March 1969 while serving as tank commander with Company M, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date when he saw a helicopter crash as it was attempting to take off from a small landing zone, Sergeant Adkins immediately maneuvered his tank to the site of the crash. After extinguishing several fires started by the crash, he searched the area for survivors and spotted his company Commander lying badly injured on the ground. Reacting instantly, he cleared the injured man’s air passage and placed him so that he could breathe freely, After treating the injured officer for shock and comforting him, Sergeant Adkins remained at the scene until an evacuation helicopter arrived. Staff Sergeant Adkins’ deep concern for the welfare of his fellow man and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
