The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Armor) Charles W. Abbey (ASN: 0-5209960), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Abbey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 November 1966 while serving as pilot of a helicopter during an emergency at the Xuan Loc Airport. He had completed refueling his helicopter and was leaving the area when a large rubber container of highly flammable fuel began burning. It was soon out of control and spreading through other fuel and ammunition supplies. Helicopters parked nearby were in danger of being engulfed and destroyed in the spreading flames. Ignoring the heat and shrapnel from exploding shells, Captain Abbey ran to his helicopter and flew it out of the danger area. Captain Abbey’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
