The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class John Marvin Couper (ASN: US-54828745), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Couper distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 March 1969, while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat assault in Tinh Bien Hoa Province, Republic of Vietnam. After air assaulting into a recently cut landing zone, the lead element of his company came under heavy enemy fire and sustained several casualties. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Specialist Fourth Class Couper crawled through the intense hostile fire in order to treat the casualties. Exhibiting exceptional regard for his fellow soldiers, Specialist Fourth Class Couper remained in his exposed position throughout the engagement until all the sounded had been evacuated to safety. His actions undoubtedly saved several lives. Specialist Fourth Class Couper’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
