The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO-4) Gary Marc Farwell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism during aerial flight on 26 April 2005, while serving as the Pilot-in-Command of a UH-60L Blackhawk Helicopter, with the 7th Special Forces Group in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Chief Warrant Officer Four Farwell’s element was responding to a MEDEVAC request for a wounded Soldier located in hazardous terrain. The Soldier was in critical condition and was unable to be transported by his unit out of the valley in which they were located. Despite being told by the forces located on the ground that landing in such an area would be extremely difficult, Chief Warrant Officer Four Farwell demonstrated a high level of aerial skill and managed to maneuver the helicopter to land within close proximity of the wounded Soldier and successfully transported the Soldier out of the valley. Chief Warrant Officer Four Farwell’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 158th Aviation Regiment and the United States Army.
