The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Thomas Andrew McCrary, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Combat Command “A”, 20th Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 29 April 1945, near the Amper River in Southern Germany. With complete disregard for his own safety, Colonel McCrary entered a burning tank and removed a wounded crew member to safety. This was done inspire of intense enemy small arms and anti-tank fire, and exploding ammunition inside the tank. His extraordinary heroism and courage instilled confidence in both his officers and men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel McCrary, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
