The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles A. Linfante (ASN: 0-5331463), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Second Lieutenant Linfante distinguished himself by heroic actions on 8 May 1967, while serving as a platoon leader for Company C, 4th Battalion (Mechanized), 23d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During a company sized sweep operation in the Boi Loi Woods, Company C encountered intense hostile fire consisting of claymore mines, rifle grenades, carbine fire, and possible anti-tank weapons fire from fortified positions. The company assaulted these positions four times and swept through them twice. While these sweeps were being conducted the company received a heavy volume of fire, but continued to advance even though sustaining twenty or more casualties. Lieutenant Linfante continued to lead his platoon forward even though his track had taken four hits from enemy rifle grenades. After the attack had been halted, Lieutenant Linfante, observing that the second platoon leader and platoon sergeant had been hit, exposed himself to the heavy volume of fire to regroup the remainder of his platoon. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Linfante refused medical attention and continued to lead his platoon, even though he had received powder burns from an enemy mine. Through his courage and outstanding leadership, he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Lieutenant Linfante’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
