Albert Vega and the other men were pinned down on a steep slope in the Carabello mountains when the Japanese opened fire on them with machine guns, wounding three of the men. Without hesitation, he crawled to within 25 yards of the enemy gun emplacements and gave such excellent covering fire that the other men in the patrol were able to withdraw. He was wounded but refused to withdraw until the men had gotten clear of the ambush. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
