The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lester O. Johnson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Lumboy, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. When an artillery officer was wounded while attempting to set up an observation post, Sergeant Johnson, seeing the wounded officer still lay in the path of machine gun fire, unhesitatingly and with disregard of his own personal safety, moved to the wounded officer’s side, dressed his wounds, and carried him to a covered position. Once there, he and another man further treated the officer and improvised a litter on which they could carry him to a nearby road, where two attempts to cross were met by fierce machine gun fire and rifle action. Disregarding the hail of enemy bullets, Sergeant Johnson placed the wounded officer on his back and struggled across the road to a point of safety where he ordered a litter form the nearest aid station and evacuated the wounded officer. Sergeant Johnson’s gallant action in saving the life of the wounded officer was an inspiration to all who witnessed it, reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
