The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Albert J. Bova (ASN: 12125009), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 22 July 1945, in the vicinity of Wertholm, Germany. A child, while swimming in the Main River, which was unusually rough as a result of high winds, was swept into deep water when she was noticed by Technician Fourth Grade Bova. Disregarding the rocks that lined the banks and dot the river bed at this point, Technician Fourth Grade Bova unhesitantly went to his assistance. After the girl had gone down for the second time he reached her in approximately ten feet of water and twenty-five yards from shore. Reaching the shore with the unconscious girl he immediately applied artificial respiration and revived the child. The heroism displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Bova reflects credit upon himself and is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
