The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Richard Perry (ASN: 15399695), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 6 April 1945, in the vicinity of Kecheshausen, Germany. Upon hearing an explosion in the rear of the company command post, Sergeant Perry immediately rushed to the scene and discovered that a trailer load of ammunition had exploded, seriously injuring two men. Picking his way through the area strewn with thermite grenades and despite the danger of exploding ammunition, he succeeded in carrying the two injured men to safety. Then, returning, he made several trips, removing the unexploded ammunition from the danger area. On his last trip he was seriously injured by an exploding phosphorus grenade. The heroism and outstanding courage displayed by Sergeant Perry reflect credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
