The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Isidore Portnoy (ASN: 32020090), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Anti-tank Company, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 13 April 1945, in the vicinity of Neunstadt, Germany. While returning from a night reconnaissance, an officer lost his footing and fell into a swift flowing river. Sergeant Portnoy, with little regard for his own safety, leaped into the river, rescued the officer, and brought him safely to land. The courage and bravery displayed by Sergeant Portnoy reflect credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
