Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 579 (August 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Howard R. Walters (ASN: 39409346), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 20 April 1945, in the vicinity of Sulzdorf, Germany. While the company advanced on the town, they received heavy enemy fire. Private First Class Walters, armed with an automatic rifle, and with little regard for his own safety, advanced boldly forward. After making his way to within one hundred and twenty-five yards of the enemy positions, Private First Class Walters, using assault fire, successfully routed the enemy. With this fire eliminated, he joined the company in the advance into the town. The bravery and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Walters reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
