The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas E. Jones (ASN: 42165089), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Tiefenbach, Germany. Although severely wounded, Private First Class Jones continued in the attack with his platoon. When the platoon was held up by enemy machine gun and sniper fire, he moved forward to a position from which he succeeded in killing two of the enemy snipers. Continuing his advance, although his wound became more painful, he eliminated an enemy machine gun with two grenades, thus enabling the platoon to continue the advance. Unable to carry on because of the painful wound, he sought aid from the medical aid man, and assisted the aid man in caring for the other wounded until transported to the aid station. The gallant action and outstanding devotion to duty of Private First Class Jones reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
