The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Allen J. Daigle (ASN: 38618404), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 25 April 1945, in the vicinity of Leipheim, Germany. When the platoon was held up by heavy sniper fire, Sergeant Daigle, despite the enemy fire, crawled forward and, firing a rifle grenade into the enemy position, succeeded in killing one sniper and forcing two to surrender. After returning to his platoon, he led a reconnaissance patrol and captured five of the enemy. Then, while he again joined his platoon, the enemy launched a strong counterattack supported by tanks. With little regard for his own safety, Sergeant Daigle, armed with a bazooka, held a position in direct path of the tanks and, by his fire from the bazooka, prevented the tanks from entering the defensive position of the platoon. The gallant action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Daigle reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
