The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John J. Zanzucchi (ASN: 36663314), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. During an enemy counterattack, Sergeant Zanzucchi, although dazed by an enemy grenade, moved from man to man placing them in position. At one point when the enemy had advanced, he rushed forward with little regard for his own safety, killing three of the enemy outright, wounding another, and rendering senseless another with his rifle butt. He then protected this gap in the line until the enemy counterattack was repulsed. The gallant action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Zanzucchi reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
