The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Robert H. Demuth (ASN: 36845028), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 25 April 1945, in the vicinity of Leipheim, Germany. During the enemy counterattack, Private First Class Demuth and his squad had made their way down the street to a position fifty yards from an enemy machine gun. With covering fire from the squad, he crawled to within grenade throwing distance of the enemy position, Then hurling two grenades and waiting until they exploded, he immediately rushed the position, firing from the hip. He destroyed the enemy position killing five of the enemy. The gallantry and devotion to duty of Private First Class Demuth contributed greatly in halting the counterattack and reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
