Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 563 (August 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Julius Whittington (ASN: 6271979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 18 January 1945, in the vicinity of Sigolsheim, France. Sergeant Whittington was in charge of one of the key outposts of the company when the communications line was severed by enemy mortar fire. While crawling along looking for the break in the lines, he observed three enemy who had infiltrated into the company position. He immediately killed the three enemy with fire from his sub-machine gun. Then after successfully reestablishing communications, he crawled back to his outpost position under fire of his own mortars who had been firing at the infiltrating enemy. Sergeant Whittington’s gallantry and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
