The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles H. Theiss (ASN: 33857310), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 26 April 1945, in the vicinity of Leipheim, Germany. Sergeant Theiss, rifle grenadier, remained at his position directly in line with an approaching tank while his platoon moved to a new position. Firing from a house he launched a grenade at the tank and then moving to another room again fired at the tank. Despite the heavy machine gun fire from the tank, he kept the attention of the enemy vehicle long enough for the platoon to take up new positions. Preparing to launch another grenade he was mortally wounded. By this time the platoon had completed their movement and from their new positions forced the enemy to withdraw. The gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty of Sergeant Theiss reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
