The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Dillo (Dille) G. Sykes (ASN: 0-2007040), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Rublingen, Germany. When the enemy overran the outpost and encircled the command post, Lieutenant Sykes organized and led an ambush patrol. By skillfully maneuvering the patrol he forced the enemy to withdraw. Although mortally wounded in the fire fight, he courageously led his men and routed the enemy. By his outstanding leadership and unselfishness he saved his unit from severe casualties and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. Lieutenant Sykes gallantry in action reflects the highest credit upon himself and is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
