The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Herman Clark (ASN: 18228073), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 6 April 1945, in the vicinity of Buchhof, Germany. An enemy artillery preparation which preceded a counterattack cut the only line of communication between the battalion command post and the regiment. Private First Class Clark unhesitatingly started through heavy fire to trace the wire to find the break. Upon finding the break, he was wounded by a hell landing near him. Although injured, he repaired the line and then started to crawl back to the command post. As he reached it, another shell landed a few yards away, wounding him. Private First Class Clark’s outstanding gallantry in this action to insure vital communications is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
