The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George W. Goss (ASN: 0-1057444), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 April 1945, in the vicinity of Jungholzhausen, Germany. During the attack on the town, First Lieutenant Goss, company executive officer, upon hearing a call for help from a wounded man, unhesitatingly moved to his aid. Running one hundred yards across an open field under heavy enemy small arms fire, and firing as he ran to ward off attacking enemy from the wounded man, Lieutenant Goss killed or wounded several of the enemy, causing the remainder to withdraw. In this courageous action Lieutenant Goss saved the life of one of his men but he himself was mortally wounded. The outstanding gallantry and devotion to his men displayed by Lieutenant Goss reflects credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
