The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edwin D. Beers (ASN: 0-2011530), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Berlichingen, Germany. When reconnaissance was necessary, Lieutenant Beers swam the swift Jagst River three different times under enemy machine gun fire. Having gained information of the enemy position, he led his platoon in the assault and captured the objective. Although seriously wounded while destroying a concealed enemy gun position, he refused to be evacuated until the completion of the mission. Lieutenant Beers gallantry in action reflects the highest credit upon himself and is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
