The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Wallace Alexander (ASN: 35070649), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. Sergeant Alexander was a member of a machine gun section during the assault on the Siegfried Line. During the action, one machine gun squad was isolated from the rest of the company by fire from an enemy machine gun position. Running through heavy enemy small arms fire, Sergeant Alexander assaulted the enemy gun position with rifle and hand grenades, killing five of the enemy, taking six prisoners, and destroying the machine gun. As a result of his daring action, the isolated machine gun squad rejoined the company and helped support the attack. Sergeant Alexander’s magnificent courage and devotion to duty in the face of enemy fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
