The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Dennis Kilbride (ASN: 31176666), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ommersheim, Germany. During the assault on the pillboxes of the Siegfried Line, Sergeant Kilbride, platoon sergeant and leader of an assault team, was severely wounded in the leg by artillery shell fragments. Despite this, he crawled through intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire to an exposed position from which he directed his team in the attack. Later, he crawled back to the line of concrete dragons’ teeth and organized other assault teams to continue the successful attack. For five hours Sergeant Kilbride maintained his command in the assault in spite of heavy casualties. He finally permitted himself to be evacuated only after all other wounded in his area had been carried to the rear. Sergeant Kilbride’s outstanding leadership and gallantry in action reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
