The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Delbert L. Fitzherbert (ASN: 31401265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 20 April 1945, in the vicinity of Sulzdorf, Germany. When his platoon was temporarily halted by enemy machine gun and mortar fire, Sergeant Fitzherbert advanced alone, and, with rifle grenades succeeded in eliminating two enemy positions, allowing his platoon to enter the town. In the ensuing action, he personally killed three enemy snipers and took five prisoners. Sergeant Fitzherbert’s courage and gallantry in action reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
