The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery), [then First Lieutenant] Clark L. Campbell (ASN: 0-1165713), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 862d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action from 5 March to 16 March 1945, in the vicinity of Plicaranshach, Germany. Captain Campbell, as forward Observer with Company L, 254th Infantry Regiment, for sixteen days, carried on his duties under the most adverse conditions. Although physically exhausted, he refused to leave his observation post and continued to direct effective artillery fire on enemy targets while his observation post was constantly subjected to heavy enemy fire. In spite of his physical condition, he assisted in carrying the heavy radio equipment for a distance of ten miles over extremely rough terrain and under heavy artillery and mortar fire in order to press the attack. His heroic efforts ceased only when he had lost consciousness. The valiant efforts and gallant actions by Captain Campbell are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
