The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Maurice K. Schiffman (ASN: 0-506113), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Sinsheim, Germany. Under intense artillery fire, Lieutenant Colonel Schiffman attempted to locate enemy gun positions so that counter-battery fire could destroy them. One round of enemy artillery fire landed within a few feet of him, blowing him through the air and painfully wounding him. Despite his injuries, he refused evacuation and continued to lead his battalion until he had achieved his mission. Lieutenant Colonel Schiffman’s magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
