The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George W. Simpson (ASN: 31341160), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 12 April 1945, in the vicinity of Lampoldshausen, Germany. Sergeant Simpson was leading his squad when an enemy machine gun fired upon the two scouts, seriously wounding one. Sergeant Simpson worked his way to the right flank of the enemy emplacement, threw a hand grenade into the position, and charged with his rifle, killing the gun crew. By bringing effective rifle fire on the remaining enemy, he allowed the two scouts to reach a covered position. In this action, he received a serious head wound and was evacuated from the field. Sergeant Simpson’s courage and leadership under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
