Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 500 (August 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Eugene Yakas (ASN: 36339947), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 18 March 1945, in the vicinity of the Siegfried Line, Germany. As his platoon was attacking a pillbox, Sergeant Yakas found that ammunition was running low within the platoon. Leaving cover, he courageously returned to the rear area under enemy fire to replenish his unit’s ammunition supply. On his return, he was seriously wounded by sniper fire, but refused to be evacuated. Upon the capture of the pillbox, he reorganized his men and led them in the attack of a second pillbox, personally placing the demolition charge which killed sixteen and wounded twenty of the enemy. Sergeant Yakas’ courage and leadership under enemy fire were directly responsible for the success of his unit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
