The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward D. St. Germain (ASN: 31460292), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 1 January 1945, in the vicinity of Singelsheim, France. When forced to withdraw from their outpost by strong enemy patrols, Private First Class St. Germain and two other soldiers encountered an enemy patrol and were wounded. Although seriously injured in both legs, he crawled to a firing position and repulsed the enemy with his automatic rifle. Then he crawled five hundred yards to the platoon command post where he alerted the company and obtained aid for the other wounded soldiers. Private First Class St. Germain’s courage and gallantry in action reflect high credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
