The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class George E. Jones (ASN: 44032781), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 12 May 1945, in the vicinity of Kunzelaau, Germany. While swimming in the Kocher River, Private First Class Jones heard the cries of a drowning soldier. Unhesitatingly, he swam to the side of the drowning man and proceeded to bring him to safety. After grappling with the panic stricken soldier and being dragged under several times, Private First Class Jones succeeded in bringing the man to the safety of the shore. Immediately applying artificial respiration, he saved the soldier’s life. The courage displayed by Private First Class Jones is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
