The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harvey Goode (ASN: 38253722), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 11 March 1945, in the vicinity of Fechingen, Germany. When the patrol encountered heavy machine gun fire, Private First Class Goode, gunner of a machine gun squad, engaged the enemy. Although slightly wounded in the head, he continued firing, killing the gunner and assistant gunner and causing the remainder of the crew to flee. Pressing the attack, he observed three enemy in a trench delivering flanking fire. As he prepared to fire upon them his machine gun jammed. He drew his pistol and, charging the trench, forced the three enemy to surrender. After repairing his gun, he rejoined the patrol. These gallant actions and outstanding devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Goode and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
