The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald Lee Lewis (ASN: 39332420), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 April 1945, in the vicinity of Orlack, Germany. During the attack on the town, Private First Class Lewis, a member of a machine gun squad, volunteered to rescue and evacuate two wounded men. Crawling over open ground under direct enemy observation and the target of enemy small arms and artillery fire, he succeeded in reaching the wounded men and later succeeded in evacuating them to safety. The outstanding gallantry of Private First Class Lewis reflects high credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
