Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 410 (July 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald H. Rose (ASN: 42084033), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Widdorn, Germany. After securing a bridgehead on the Jagst River, the second platoon was attacked by SS troops. When bazooka fire was directed at his squad from a distance of fifteen yards, and machine gun and rifle fire increased in intensity, Private First Class Rose signaled his men to withdraw while he moved into the open for a better field of fire to cover their withdrawal. Gallantly and single-handedly, against a numerically superior force, he continued the fire fight until all men had successfully withdrawn. While attempting to withdraw himself, Private First Class Rose was fatally wounded. The bold and determined action of Private First Class Rose enabled his squad to withdraw without further casualties. The magnificent courage and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Rose reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
