The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Luther H. Hart (ASN: 0-1103685), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 263d Engineer Combat Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. Lieutenant Hart, leading a platoon of combat engineers and working with elements of a rifle company, had the mission of breaching a position in the Siegfried Line. Advancing with the necessary demolitions to breach the line, Lieutenant Hart was wounded. After first aid was given, he refused to be evacuated but continued on his mission. Wounded a second time, Lieutenant Hart still refused to be evacuated and organized his platoon to fight as infantry. In this action, Lieutenant Hart was killed by enemy fire. His magnificent courage and devotion to duty under enemy fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
