The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Albert E. Murphy (ASN: 35394001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. Sergeant Murphy had been wounded and evacuated to an aid station. Upon seeing his platoon leader brought into the aid station as a casualty, Sergeant Murphy, realizing that the platoon was without an experienced leader, despite his painful injuries, went back to the platoon and led them in the attack through the Siegfried Line. The exceptional courage and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Murphy reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
