The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Forest R. Churchill (ASN: 0-1185386), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ommersheim, Germany. During the attack on the Siegfried Line, the company was subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire, the heaviest concentrations falling on Lieutenant Churchill’s platoon. Trying to take cover, his messenger was severely wounded. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Churchill moved over open ground through the barrage to reach the messenger. Another shell burst killed the messenger and wounded Lieutenant Churchill. The gallant intrepidity shown by Lieutenant Churchill reflects the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
