The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant William C. Hubbard (ASN: 6927102), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 April 1945, in the vicinity of Orlack, Germany. When the company was held up by intense enemy machine gun fire, First Sergeant Hubbard, in command of one platoon, charged the enemy gun position alone, and with hand grenades and a submachine gun killed two and forced the surrender of three of the enemy. Sergeant Hubbard then reorganized his platoon and led the final assault on the objective, where he was killed by an enemy hand grenade. The gallantry and outstanding courage of Sergeant Hubbard in this action facilitated the accomplishment of his company’s mission, and reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
