The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph E. Giampietro (ASN: 31424770), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Stein, Germany. Private First Class Giampietro volunteered to eliminate an enemy machine gun which was causing heavy casualties in the company. He rose from his covered position in the face of enemy machine gun and sniper fire and charged the enemy position, killing two enemy and capturing three. He then assisted his platoon leader in killing five snipers. Private First Class Giampietro’s courage in the face of enemy fire and his complete devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
